SUV and Caltrans truck burst into flames after DUI crash north of Tahoe, video shows

Caltrans says one of its trucks was struck Tuesday morning by a suspected DUI driver north of Lake Tahoe, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.

A motorist believed to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol collided with a Caltrans “cone truck” on Highway 267, “causing both vehicles to catch on fire,” Caltrans District 3 said in a tweet. No one was seriously hurt, according to Caltrans.

The tweet includes video showing a truck and an SUV each heavily engulfed in flames before sunrise.

Caltrans did not specify where on the highway the incident occurred, and no further information on the alleged DUI driver was released. The department tweeted that the video is a reminder “of the dangers of DUI and lack of awareness in work zones.”

Highway 267, aka North Shore Boulevard, connects the north side of Lake Tahoe to Interstate 80 near Truckee. The highway is used to access Northstar ski resort.
