Sacramento Regional Transit bus and light rail services face delays amid COVID surge

The recent surge of coronavirus infections is leading to delays and trip cancellations on Sacramento Regional Transit’s light rail and bus services, as the already short-staffed provider sees drivers and operators call out sick with COVID-19.

“COVID-19 cases reaching record highs and a national workforce shortage is having a tremendous impact on SacRT operations and staffing, which is causing an increase in trip cancellations and service delays,” RT said in social media posts Thursday morning.

The transportation provider urged riders to check for real-time updates at sacrt.com/alerts or elkgrovetransit.com to be aware of cancellations or other schedule changes.

Riders can also use the Alert SacRT smartphone app or call customer service at 916-321-2877.

RT in a Twitter thread said it is “aggressively” recruiting for additional staff to address personnel shortages.

Sacramento County on Thursday expanded on its all-time high in COVID-19 cases, with health officials reporting a seven-day average of 87 cases per 100,000, about 36% higher than the peak of the winter 2020 surge.
