Sacramento lawmaker unveils $5 million for safety improvements on Folsom Boulevard

A California lawmaker has announced the city of Sacramento will receive $5 million for safety improvements on Folsom Boulevard, including a stretch of the roadway in East Sacramento where a mother was struck and killed while picking her daughter up from Phoebe Hearst Elementary School earlier this year.

State Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, unveiled the new state funding on Tuesday.

The funds will go toward reducing lanes of Folsom Boulevard between 58th and 65th streets “to calm traffic and reduce conflict points,” McCarty’s office said in a news release.

They will also go toward installing continuous bike lanes between 48th and 65th streets, as well as restriping of the roadway to reconfigure lanes.

Guadalupe Jimenez, 45, was fatally struck the afternoon of Jan. 13 following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Folsom Boulevard and 60th Street while she was picking her daughter up from school. Detectives with the Sacramento Police Department determined that one of the involved drivers ran a red light.

“The loss of Lupe Jimenez Brown is a tragedy and my condolences go out to the Brown family,” McCarty said in a prepared statement. “It’s important Sacramento’s pedestrians and cyclists are safe while using busy crosswalks and bike lanes.”

“While these investments won’t bring Lupe back, they will increase pedestrian safety for current and future Phoebe Hearst families and East Sacramento neighbors,” Leticia Garcia, a Sacramento City Unified School District board member, said in another prepared statement.

Garcia said earlier this year she is committed to working with the city to improve street safety, about which Phoebe Hearst parents have expressed concerns.
