Thanksgiving Day road closures: Sacramento streets to close for Run to Feed the Hungry
More than 28,000 people are expected to flood the streets of East Sacramento Thanksgiving Day morning, prompting road closures in the area for several hours.
The biggest Thanksgiving race in the country will shut down Sacramento roads as early as 6 a.m. ahead of the 8:15 a.m. 10K race. A new set of participants will flood the streets again starting at 9 a.m. for the 5K race.
If you live in the area, organizers ask that you park your vehicle in your driveway.
All streets will reopen by noon on Thursday, said Gabby Miller with the Sacramento City Manager’s Office in an email to The Bee. The race is one big loop, beginning on J Street near the entrance of Sacramento State’s campus and into the tree-lined streets of East Sacramento.

Sacramento streets closed for Run to Feed the Hungry
Both motorists and pedestrians should avoid the following major streets until noon on Thursday. Here’s the list:
- J Street between Carlson Drive and 45th Street
- 45th Street between J Street and Folsom Boulevard
- Folsom Boulevard between 45th and 41st streets
- 41st Street between Folsom Boulevard and H Street
- H Street between Alhambra Boulevard and Camellia Ave
- Alhambra Boulevard between H Street and McKinley Boulevard
- McKinley Boulevard between Alhambra Boulevard and Elvas Avenue
- Elvas Avenue between McKinley Boulevard & 51st Street
- 51st Street between Elvas Avenue and D Street
- D Street between 51st Street and Coloma Way
- Coloma Way between D Street and Pico Way
- Pico Way between Coloma Way and F Street
- F Street between Pico Way and 47th Street
- 47th Street between F and H streets
When will racers run through my Sacramento neighborhood?
East Sacramento neighborhoods have been broken down into zones one through nine ahead of Thursday morning’s race. Depending on where your home in located, certain roads within the zone will be flooded with race participants.
To check which zone you belong to, first check Sacramento Food Bank and Family Service’s map:
Then, cross reference it to the list of times when each zone with be affected and how your get our car out of the area if you must leave:
- Zone 1 (8:24 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) - Drive to the corner of 39th Street and McKinley Boulevard
- Zone 2 (8:24 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.) - Drive to J Street east or north of McKinley Boulevard
- Zone 3 - C St. and Elvas Ave. are open both directions during the event.
- Zone 4 - Exit from any street to Elvas Avenue and turn right or left on Elvas Avenue
- Zone 5 (8:24 a.m. to 915 a.m.) - Exit on to J Street and head west
- Zone 6 (8:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m.) - Leave the area through Folsom Boulevard
- Zone 7 (8:19 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) - Leave the area through Folsom Boulevard
- Zone 8 (8:15 a.m. to 11 a.m.) - Leave the area through Folsom Boulevard
- Zone 9 - Exit from Carlson Drive to H Street before 7 a.m. or from Camellia Avenue after 7 a.m.
