How high are California gas prices ahead of summer? See latest trends on interactive map

Gas prices in California are still inching up as we enter May.

As of May 1, the current average price for regular fuel in the state is $4.87, according to the American Automobile Association. It was $4.82 last month.

Per usual, the national average price is lower, standing at $3.61.

CA vs. other states

Compared to other states, California has one of the highest gas prices, along with Hawaii, Arizona and Washington.

Hawaii and Arizona’s average price for regular fuel is around $4.70. Washington is at $4.59.

Alabama has the lowest price in the country at $3.19.

You might find some relief in gas prices, depending on which county you’re in.

Some of the lowest prices you’ll find in California are in Yuba City, Modesto, Chico and Stockton, according to AAA, where it ranges from $4.48 to $4.71.

Expect to pay more at the pump if you’re in the San Luis Obispo-Atascadero-Paso Robles area or San Francisco. Prices here go upwards of $5.
