BART’s Transbay Tube weekend closure to add time to S.F. travel
Weekend highway travel between Sacramento and San Francisco will likely be more congested, especially at the Bay Bridge, because the Transbay Tube will be closed for repair and maintenance.
The tube usually carries about 80,000 riders between San Francisco and Oakland on the weekend. While a limited number of buses will run between the cities on Saturday and Sunday, they are for people who do not have cars.
The buses are expected to add at least an hour to the trip between Oakland and San Francisco.
The lack of BART service between the cities will crowd more cars onto Bay Area highways and in both cities. The California Highway Patrol is advising motorists to give themselves plenty of time to reach their destinations.
Drivers can use the San Mateo Bridge or the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge as alternates to the Bay Bridge.
