13 Sacramento RT stations on Blue and Gold lines to close Thursday into weekend

Sacramento transit riders passing through downtown should plan for a longer trip beginning Thursday and lasting into the weekend as more than a dozen light rail stations are shut down.

Platform construction for the light rail station at the Eighth and O streets will cause multiple service disruptions.

Wednesday, light rail trains were passing through the Eighth and O station but not stopping, since the station was closed to passengers. Riders who usually travel from that station should use the Seventh and Capitol or Eighth and Capitol stations as alternatives.

Between Thursday and Sunday, the construction will lead to service disruptions at stations along the Blue and Gold lines, according to Sacramento Regional Transit. Thirteen stations — if you divide Cathedral Square into the one-way stations at Tenth and K streets and 11th and K streets — will close, and two stations will partially shut down with eastbound service still available from the Globe and 13th stations.

Thirteen Sacramento Regional Transit light rail stations will be closed Thursday through Saturday due to construction at the station on Eighth and O streets. Two other stations, Globe and 13th Street, will allow passengers to travel eastbound, away from downtown.

Shuttle buses will transport riders between the 13th Street station and Globe station along the Blue Line. The Gold Line will have a bus bridge between the 13th Street station and the Sacramento Valley station.

Shuttle buses will be available every 20 to 30 minutes, so riders should plan for extra time.

The 13 stations that will close are:

  • Alkali Flat/La Valentina
  • 12th & I
  • Cathedral Square (10th & K and 11th & K)
  • 9th & K
  • Sacramento Valley Station
  • 7th & Capitol
  • 8th & Capitol
  • 8 & K
  • 8th & H (County Center)
  • 7th & I (County Center)
  • 8th & O
  • Archives Plaza

Construction at the Eighth & O Station is meant to help ready the site for the new S700 low-floor light rail trains, which have been operating on the Gold Line since fall 2024. The eastbound platform for the station has been closed since July 2022 due to a nearby private development, according to the RT website, and the completion of the work will also allow the station to fully reopen.
