U.S. teacher injured in fall from cliff in escape from sex attack

Hanna Gavios, a New York City woman, fell 150 feet off a cliff in Thailand as she tried to escape a sexual assault.

The 23-year-old is undergoing treatment for a severe spinal injury due to the fall.

Gavios was vacationing as she scrambled away from a tour guide, according to the New York Daily News. The guide, who the Daily News identified as 28-year-old Apai Raingworchai, made sexual advances on the young tourist, causing her to panic and run from him.

Gavios lay helpless for several hours Thursday, Sept. 1, as rescue crews and local rock climbers searched for her.

She is a teacher working in Vietnam.
