Secret Service ‘aware’ of George Lopez’s joke about $80 million bounty on Trump
Comedian George Lopez made a joke on Instagram about an unverified $80 million bounty on President Donald Trump, and the Secret Service has announced that it’s “aware” of the situation.
The Instagram post alleges that Iran has offered $80 million for Trump’s head after a U.S. airstrike killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani last week. Lopez wrote, “We’ll do it for half.”
Lopez quickly came under fire, and people began calling on the Secret Service to respond, the Hill reported.
A spokesperson for Lopez told Fox News that the comment was just “a joke.”
The Secret Service has said that it’s “aware” of Lopez’s comment.
“The Secret Service is aware of the Tweet made by Mr. Lopez,” a Secret Service representative told the Washington Examiner. “The Secret Service takes all threats against the President and or any of our protectees seriously, and as a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving protective intelligence.”
A Facebook spokesperson also told the Washington Examiner that the comment “violated Instagram’s community guidelines” and “will be removed shortly.”
Reports that a eulogist offered $80 million for Trump’s head began circulating on social media over the weekend, Business Insider reported.
“We will give a prize of $80 million to whoever brings the head of the person who ordered the killing and terrorism of our big revolutionary hero,” an unnamed eulogist said in Farsi in a Twitter video by the NBC News correspondent Ali Arouzi.
“Anyone who brings the yellow-haired lunatic to us will get $80 million from the Iranian people,” the eulogist said.
