‘And the winner is...’ Obamas score Oscar, Grammy nominations in life after White House
The Obamas might need to make extra room on their award shelf.
Former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama received an Oscar nomination for their first Netflix film Monday, adding to a growing list of award nods since leaving the White House.
The film “American Factory” produced by the Obamas’ production company Higher Ground was nominated for best documentary feature. The film centers on a factory in Ohio that was reopened by a Chinese billionaire.
Barack Obama celebrated on Twitter on Monday, saying the film is “the kind of story we don’t see often enough.”
Michelle Obama also celebrated the nomination by shouting out the directors in an Instagram post, saying she “couldn’t be happier.”
“What Julia (Reichert) and Steve (Bognar) capture on film is at times painful, at times exhilarating, but always thoughtful and always real,” she said.
Other documentaries that were nominated for the award include “The Cave,” “The Edge of Democracy,” “For Sama” and “Honeyland.”
Both Barack and Michelle Obama have received award nominations for projects outside of the White House. Barack Obama was twice Grammy nominated for best spoken word album for “The Audacity of Hope” and “Dreams From My Father,” and won both times.
Michelle Obama was also nominated in the same category for “Becoming” for this year’s Grammy awards, set for Jan. 26. The former first lady made a surprise appearance alongside Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys and other women at last year’s Grammy Awards.
