Homeless woman asleep in driveway run over by car exiting garage, Oregon cops say

A driver leaving his apartment complex for work Friday morning told police he felt a “bump” but didn’t see anything amiss, then felt another bump as he pulled forward, Oregon cops say.

That’s when he discovered he’d run over a 47-year-old homeless woman who had fallen asleep in front of the Oregon apartment complex’s garage door, police say in a release.

Trecell R. Stinson died later Friday at a Portland hospital, police say. She had been conscious and talking after the 6:25 a.m. accident in the 2700 block of Southeast 92nd Avenue, and her injuries were initially not thought to be life-threatening.

Portland police are continuing to investigate. No charges have been filed against the driver, who immediately called 911 after realizing he had hit Stinson, police say.

In December, a Portland garbage truck ran over a homeless man sleeping under a tarp, The Oregonian reported. He was hospitalized with leg injuries.

In November, a car ran over a 56-year-old homeless woman sleeping in a friend’s tent along a Portland highway on-ramp, KGW reported.

A 2019 tally found 4,015 homeless people in Portland, with about 2,000 of those sleeping on the streets, Willamette Week reported.

A “point in time” count conducted in 2018 found 552,000 people experiencing homelessness in the United States, according to the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. They include families, veterans, young people and chronically homeless single adults.
