The first of several memorials for George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in police custody last week, is set to take place Thursday in Minneapolis.
The memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central time at North Central University in Minneapolis. Other services are scheduled for Saturday in Raeford, North Carolina, and Houston, where Floyd lived for several years, according to the New York Times.
Floyd was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, so “his family would remember him” in the state, his sister told WRAL.
Broadcast and cable networks will be covering the service. You can watch Thursday’s memorial here:
Hundreds are expected to attend the service today, The New York times reported.
Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was shown on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than 8 minutes before he died. He was arrested Friday, according to the Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner.
Chauvin received an additional second-degree murder charge on Wednesday, McClatchy News reported. Chauvin was previously charged with third-degree murder. The other three Minneapolis officers on the scene of Floyd’s death have also been charged in Floyd’s murder, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced Wednesday.
Floyd’s son, Quincy Mason Floyd, kneeled and prayed at the site where his father died in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Fox9 reported.
“I’m here reuniting with my family, trying to get justice for my father,” Quincy said, according to the outlet. “No man or woman should be without their father.”
