Netflix releases Black Lives Matter collection. These movies and shows made the list
If you’re looking for movies and TV shows about experiences of the black community, Netflix has a collection just for you.
Netflix’s new “Black Lives Matter” hub highlights “powerful and complex narratives about the black experience,” the company announced Wednesday morning. The curated list has programming “about racial injustice and Blackness in America.”
The collection includes Netflix originals such as “13th,” a documentary which analyzes decriminalization of black people; “When They See Us,” a scriptes series based on the true story of the five black teenagers falsely accused of an attack in Central Park; and “Dear White People,” a drama-comedy series featuring students of color navigating life at an Ivy League college.
Michelle Obama’s “Becoming,” the Denzel Washington-led “Malcom X” and Beyonce’s “Homecoming” are also featured in the hub, along with programming starring Kerry Washington, Regina King and Octavia Spencer.
Other specials include biographical movies or documentaries on Barack Obama, Sam Cooke, Quincy Jones and Rodney King. The Spike Lee-directed “Da 5 Bloods,” starring Chadwick Boseman, will be released to Netflix on Friday.

Netflix commented on the Black Lives Matter movement last week. “To be silent is to be complicit. Black lives matter,” the streaming service said. “We have a platform, and we have a duty to our black members, employees, creators and talent to speak up.”
The new collection comes after 2011’s “The Help” was the most streamed movie on the service last week, according to Entertainment Weekly. Many people, including actresses in the film, have criticized the movie, which highlights a “white savior” in a community with black housemaids.
Viola Davis, who portrayed one of the maids, said in 2018 that she regretted taking part in the film. On Monday, Bryce Dallas Howard, another actress in “The Help,” said the fictional movie was told through the perspective of a white character written primarily by white people. “We can all go further,” the actress said on Instagra, while mentioning several movies highlighting true stories about black people, including several now available in the Netflix collection.
