You can stargaze at Grand Canyon this weekend without leaving your couch. Here’s how

Hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars but stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic? Grand Canyon National Park can help.

The 30th Grand Canyon Star Party will be held virtually for a week starting Saturday, the park said.

“While the on-site event at Grand Canyon National Park has been canceled on both rims due to concerns over COVID-19 this year, the park hopes to bring the wonders of the night sky into the virtual realm through a series of video premieres on Grand Canyon’s official Facebook account,” Grand Canyon National Park said in a news release.

The park is known as one of the best places to see amazing stars light up the night sky. The skies over the Grand Canyon are clear of light pollution and can be filled with thousands of visible stars, the park said.

The virtual Grand Canyon Star Party will provide viewers a glimpse of the starry nights from their couch.

“The weeklong Star Party Speaker Series will feature eight special guest speakers,” the park said. “Each speaker will present their program over a video-conferencing feed.”

Astronomers will hook up video cameras to their telescopes and pick out 10 to 12 celestial objects over the course of an hour or an hour and a half, according to the park.

“National parks such as the Grand Canyon help protect some of the last remaining dark skies in this country,” the park said. “The amount of lights inventoried and retrofitted in this process undoubtedly makes Grand Canyon National Park one of the largest, most complex, International Dark Sky Parks in the world.”
