Couple plays lottery just before Christmas — and gets the gift of retirement in NC
A couple in North Carolina got the gift of a great retirement after winning $200,000 through the state lottery when they bought a $5 scratch-off ticket at a Bass Country Store, according to the NC Education Lottery.
Kelly McGee bought the “7” ticket at the shop in Coats on Thursday, Dec. 23, she told lottery officials. She scratched the ticket in her car with her husband and asked him to pop back in the store to check if they won. Shortly after, he was running back to the car with the good news, she said.
“He ran out to tell me we won, but I didn’t believe him, I still don’t believe it,” McGee told lottery officials. “We’re so blessed and thankful. This will help us with the retirement we deserve.”
According to the NC Education Lottery, McGee works as a cafeteria manager and her husband is a retired construction worker. The two took home $140,501 after taxes.
McGee told officials that they plan to use the money toward their retirement, paying off a car and purchasing land. “We won’t have to worry about anything, but paying the light bill,” she said.
