Longtime lottery player tried his luck on new ticket — and scored SC game’s top prize
A longtime lottery player switched up his routine — which led him to score much more cash in South Carolina.
The man is celebrating a $30,000 win after trying his luck on a different ticket, according to the S.C. Education Lottery.
“I was pleasantly surprised,” the winner said in a Feb. 14 news release.
The man hit the jackpot after a stop at the Country Food Mart in Pickens, roughly 25 miles west of Greenville. While at the store, officials said he spent $2 on a ticket for the Lucky No. 7 Doubler game.
It turns out, the scratch-off beat odds of 1 in 528,000 to win the game’s top prize. The man kept $20,700 after taxes, lottery spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News in an email.
“I’m saving it for a rainy day,” the winner — who didn’t want to be identified publicly — told the S.C. Education Lottery.
Officials said he scored the big win after small Pick 3 prizes led him to choose another game. It’s not the first time a change in routine has ended in a windfall in South Carolina.
Last month, officials said a man was stopping at a different gas station than usual when he bought a lucky lottery ticket.
And another man trying to avoid the crowds at his go-to store instead went to another one, where he scored a ticket worth $200,000, McClatchy News reported.
