A hiker climbing toward Indian Staircase at Red River Gorge in Kentucky made it to the top of a rock scramble before falling back down 30 feet, officials say.

The hiker then bounced off rocks that make up the scramble, according to Powell County Search & Rescue. Rock scrambles are rocky portions of some trails that typically require hikers to use their hands and feet to climb toward the top.

Alongside county EMS and other search and rescue teams, Powell County Search & Rescue says its team responded to a call regarding an injured hiker on Monday, March 21.

The hiker had injuries that required them to be carried out of the woods, according to the Facebook post. Photos show about 10 rescuers helping carry the hiker from the trail using rope equipment.

The hiker was then flown to a trauma center for treatment, and they are expected to fully recover, according to the post.

Red River Gorge is home to “spectacular rock features, including sandstone arches and towering cliffs,” according to the U.S. Forest Service. The park attracts hikers, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts.

It is about 55 miles southeast of Lexington.
