‘Fast moving’ car sends firetruck responding to call into Texas apartment, officials say
A Texas firetruck was responding to a call when it was struck by a “fast moving vehicle” that continued driving away, according to local media reports.
The force of the impact caused the fire engine to swerve off the road and directly into an apartment building, the San Antonio Fire Department shared on Twitter.
The firetruck crashed into the building at about 10:40 p.m. April 5, taking out the complex’s stairway toward the second floor and damaging a balcony, KSAT reported. Several residents needed a ladder to evacuate from their homes.
“The one occupant in the apartment with the most damage, she and her husband and child had just gone to bed,” Chief Charles Hood told WOAI. “So you can just imagine if it had been just a few hours earlier or someone standing at the corner, it could have been multiple tragedies tonight but we avoided those so we are very happy about that.”
Nobody reported any injuries, KSAT reported, but 17 residents were displaced as the building needs repaired.
The driver of the sedan fled after crashing into the firetruck, WOAI reported, and an investigation is ongoing.
“Unfortunately we are struck regularly,” the fire department said. “PLEASE ‘move over or slow down’ for Emergency vehicles.”
