Construction worker sleeps with lottery ticket after big North Carolina jackpot win
A construction worker who took a trip to North Carolina came home with a $1 million lottery win.
William Blair of Lynchburg, Virginia, had won the jackpot in the North Carolina lottery — a surprise he told lottery officials he was still processing.
“I kept the ticket with me in my sleep,” Blair told lottery officials.
Blair had taken a trip to High Point, North Carolina, to visit some family and friends, according to lottery officials. While he was there, he decided to buy a lottery ticket.
He bought his lucky $10 50X The Cash ticket at Superior Foods on North Centennial Street in High Point on Saturday, April 9, lottery officials said. Blair didn’t realize how much he won until he scratched the ticket off in his truck with his brother.
“I was at a loss for words,” Blair told lottery officials. “My brother thought I was full of it!”
Blair had the choice of taking out his prize in increments over 20 years or cashing out $600,000 right away. He chose to cash out the lump sum, according to lottery officials, and brought home $426,063 after taxes.
He plans to use the winnings toward retirement and to “spoil” his niece, lottery officials said.
High Point is about 90 miles northwest of Raleigh.
