Woman hit and killed by passenger train while trying to rescue her dog, NY cops say

A New York woman was hit and killed by an oncoming passenger train while trying to rescue her dog from the tracks, officials say.

Carrie Gemmell, 36, of Kingston, was struck by a southbound Amtrak train on the afternoon of Sunday, May 1, New York State Police said in a release. Police responded around 4:45 p.m.

Investigators say that Gemmell was “attempting to collect her dog” on or near the railroad tracks in Rhinebeck, which is about 60 miles south of Albany.

Gemmell was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Her dog died as well.

An unidentified family member was with Gemmell at the time and witnessed the incident, officials told the Hudson Valley Post.

“The Dutchess County Emergency Response Team responded and assisted on scene. The Mobile Crisis team also responded and rendered aid to the impacted family,” state police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
