6-year-old girl dies after being pulled out of water at Michigan beach, officials say
A 6-year-old girl drowned on Memorial Day in a lake in Michigan, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said it is investigating the drowning, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 30, at Martindale Beach along Kent Lake.
Michael Reese, the chief of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks Police Department that was first on the scene, told The Detroit News a group of volunteers “formed a human chain” and went into the water in their attempts to find the girl after she went missing.
She was found unconscious in a weeded area and was taken to an area hospital, The Detroit News reported.
“They found her and put her on the stretcher. Lifeless,” witness Dominique Springer told WXYZ. “It’s sad. Brought tears to my eyes. I literally cried tears.”
Another witness, Greg Krisher, said volunteers had to push the ambulance out of the sand after it got stuck, according to WXYZ.
Video shared on social media shows several people pushing the stretcher that was being escorted by officers on ATVs.
The girl died at Providence Hospital in Novi, about 30 miles northwest of Detroit.
The sheriff’s office said the girl is from Detroit. Her name has not been publicly disclosed.
