Manhole explosions create scenes of chaos in Boston, videos show. ‘The building shook’
Two manhole explosions created billowing clouds of smoke and scenes of chaos in downtown Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, June 2, videos show.
One witness in a nearby building told CBS News the blasts were “very loud.”
“The building shook, we saw smoke fly up. A guy we took the elevator down with told us he saw the manhole cover fly up to the 12th floor.”
The explosions shattered a window and resulted in two buildings being evacuated the morning of June 2, the Boston Fire Department wrote on Twitter. One woman was sent to the hospital with burns, ABC News reported.
Video shared by WHDH reporter Steve Cooper shows smoke pouring out of one manhole just before the second one is seen erupting with fire during the morning work commute in Boston.
Some people were seen running away from the smoky street after the blasts in a video shared by Boston 25 News.
While an investigation into what caused the explosions is ongoing, Deputy Fire Chief Brian Tully told reporters at a news conference that it was possibly due to “an overpressure situation,” according to ABC News.
As of 10 a.m. ET, the Boston fire department said it was monitoring carbon monoxide levels in the affected buildings.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said officials are “getting to the bottom of what happened” and called the incident “very scary,” according to CBS News.
