Moose crashes through Mustang’s windshield on highway, Minnesota cops say
A moose crashed through a car traveling on a Minnesota highway, injuring one of the four passengers, authorities said.
The Iron Range family of four was heading north on Highway 53 in St. Louis County shortly before midnight Saturday, June 11, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.
The 1987 Ford Mustang then collided with a moose in the road — and it crashed through the windshield, Minnesota State Patrol said in the incident report.
A 37-year-old female passenger was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The 40-year-old driver, 8-year-old boy and 7-year-old boy were not injured.
All passengers are from Eveleth, a northeast Minnesota city in St. Louis County.
The adult female moose died in the crash, according to the Star Tribune.
“The moose is Minnesota’s largest wild animal, and Minnesota is one of the few states that have moose,” according to the state’s Department of Natural Resources. “The largest member of the deer family, averaging 950 to 1,000 pounds and sometimes exceeding 1,200 pounds. Its antlers sometimes measure five feet across and weigh up to 40 pounds.”
