An infant is in critical condition after being found “underwater” and “unresponsive” while under a babysitter’s care, Arizona police said.

The babysitter was watching the 1-year-old and his two older siblings at her home on Thursday, June 16, El Mirage Police Department said in a release.

Around 8:30 p.m., the babysitter was bathing the 1-year-old with his 3-year-old sibling, police said. Her “attention was diverted, and she went to another part of the home.” When she returned, the boy was “underwater.”

Officials received a 911 call about the incident at around 8:35 p.m., police said. Upon arriving at the home, officials found an “unresponsive” 1-year-old boy.

“Paramedics performed emergency life-saving measures on the infant and transported him to a local hospital,” the release says.

The boy was later airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Friday morning, police said.

The babysitter was arrested on charges of child endangerment, police said.

El Mirage is about 20 miles northeast of Phoenix.
