60-year-old dies while mud bogging at Wisconsin event. ‘You are among the legends’

A well-known racer in the mud bogging community died during an event in Wisconsin on Saturday, July 16, officials say.

Daniel Richter, 60, was a participant in the Neillsville Mud Race at the Clark County Fairgrounds, according to WEAU.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what led to his death, WQOY reported.

His cousin, Brett Richter, said Daniel was racing his Richter Scale vehicle when he had “a real rough accident” while making a pass.

“Life with passion — Dan lived it to the end,” the racer’s cousin said. “With his last breath, he was teaching us a lesson without using words.”

Mud bogging is an off-road sport popular in the United States and Canada where racers drive their all-terrain vehicle through a muddy course. It’s also referred to as “mud racing, mud running or even just mudding.”

Loved ones said Richter was among the best at his sport. He set several national records and won many national events, according to his cousin.

Mike Lebakken said in a Facebook post that Richter was “everything a racer should be.”

“You are among the legends and will be sorely missed,” Dan Sauder wrote on Facebook.

“You were a great racer, but more than that you were a great man,” added the Midwest Motorsports Association. “You are loved by many and we are all going to miss you. I’m sure you’re in the winner’s circle getting your wings.”
