60-year-old NC man trying to refuel van is hit and killed on Virginia bridge, cops say
A North Carolina man was trying to refuel his van when he was hit and killed on a Virginia bridge, officials said.
The 60-year-old had run out of fuel before getting out onto the James River Bridge. That’s when another van served around the stalled vehicle and ran into its driver on Monday, Aug. 1, news outlets reported.
The 60-year-old later died of crash-related injuries. He was identified in a news release as Billy Ray Caulder of Hope Mills, North Carolina, a town roughly 15 miles south of the Fort Bragg military base.
Now, Virginia State Police say the person behind the wheel of the other van faces a reckless driving charge. That driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.
The crash was reported at about 11 a.m. in the north lanes of the James River Bridge, which links Newport News and Isle of Wight County. The thoroughfare was shut down for about three hours due to the subsequent police investigation, The Virginian-Pilot reported.
After the crash, a white van with a North Carolina license plate was left with damage to its driver’s side, a photo shared with WTKR shows.
Speed and alcohol reportedly didn’t contribute to the crash.
