When Honolulu firefighters got word of an injured hiker, they jumped into action.

Four units — a total of 13 people — headed to the trailhead on the Pacific Palisades on Sunday, Sept. 4, according to a news release from the Honolulu Fire Department.

Upon arrival, the firefighters were directed to a 130-pound dog, injured and stuck on the trail, according to the release.

Mele, a black, dark brown Mastiff lab mix, was stuck about 300 feet down in a gulch, or small ravine, below the dog’s home, Jaimie Kinard Song, the fire department’s public information officer, told McClatchy News in an email.

Firefighters made their way down to Mele, where three residents were waiting, according to Kinard Song.

While the residents made their way back to the home, Mele “was lowered via a rope system to the bottom of the gulch,” Kinard Song said.

After taking Mele to a road at the bottom of the ravine, the canine was reunited with its owners who were waiting back home.
