Four people died after a speeding car slammed into a train in South Carolina, officials said.

A fifth person was injured after officials said the car tried to get around railroad crossing arms on Saturday, Sept. 10. The car then hit the train that had stopped on the tracks, according to a preliminary investigation from the Florence County Coroner’s Office.

The nighttime crash was reported along North Dargan Street in Florence, roughly 65 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach.

Transportation company CSX told McClatchy News in an email that one of its trains was involved in a Florence-area collision.

“At CSX safety is our highest priority in the communities we serve,” the company said in its statement. “We remind the public that any activity on or near a rail line can be dangerous.”

The four people killed in the crash were identified in a news release as 34-year-old Mitchell Carter II, 40-year-old Jeneka Carter, 46-year-old Antoine Hines and 27-year-old Ruby Taylor. All were from Florence or the nearby town of Hartsville.

A fifth person survived the crash and was taken to a hospital, the coroner’s office said.

No one on the train was hurt, according to the transportation company.
