An Atlanta-area man is accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife and her boyfriend during a custody exchange, according to Georgia authorities.

The deadly incident unfolded around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at a home in Covington, local outlets reported, citing the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

A man and a woman were there to drop off the woman’s 15-year-old daughter, who deputies said did not want to get out and go with her father, identified as Marquez Smith, according to WXIA.

That’s when deputies said Smith went inside his home and returned with a gun before shooting the mother of his child and her boyfriend, WSB-TV reported. The couple attempted to drive away but crashed about two houses down, according to the station.

Relatives said the couple’s 7-month-old child was also in the car at the time, according to WAGA.

McClatchy News reached out to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, Sept. 12, and was awaiting a response.

The woman died in an ambulance on the way to a hospital, and her boyfriend died at the scene, WXIA reported, citing deputies.

Smith initially took off in his car but later turned himself in to the sheriff’s office on Monday, Sept. 12, according to the news station. He was booked on multiple charges including murder, aggravated assault and second-degree cruelty to children, online records show.

He remains in the Newton County Jail without bond.

Covington is about 35 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
