A child who vanished in Tennessee was found dead near the base of a waterfall, officials said.

Now, there’s an investigation into the child’s death, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called at about 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16. Two kids had been reported missing in Sale Creek, a community roughly 30 miles northeast of Chattanooga.

“It was believed the two juveniles (wandered) off near one of the trails near the bluff and a waterfall,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release.

One of the children was found safe, and crews kept searching for the other one. “The second child was found deceased near the bottom of a waterfall” at about 9:30 p.m., according to deputies.

The sheriff’s office in its release said it didn’t share further details due to the children’s ages.
