A family member of an 87-year-old woman found her dead sitting in her wheelchair inside her Chicago apartment, according to police in Illinois. Now, a homicide investigation is underway.

She was discovered dead just before 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, the Chicago Police Department said in a news release on Oct. 17.

The woman – identified as Mae Brown by the Cook County Medical Examiner – was sitting in her wheelchair with injuries to her face and head, police said. Medical officials said she died from multiple assault injuries.

Her death was ruled a homicide, and detectives are investigating, police said.

“She didn’t get a chance to enjoy the rest of her life,” Brown’s neighbor told ABC 7.

No suspects have been identified, police said.
