Man follows 8-year-old into school bathroom and assaults him, CA school district says
A man is accused of walking onto a California elementary school campus, threatening two students, and assaulting at least one of them in a bathroom, school district administrators say.
It happened just before 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 23, according to Oakland police. When officers arrived, they learned that an adult confronted a child, they said.
Staff at the school had already removed the man from the campus by the time police arrived, according to a statement from the Oakland Unified School District. He is the family member of a student at the school, the statement said.
They called the police as they tended to students who were scared by the incident.
In the month or so since the attack, the parents of the student who was allegedly assaulted say they haven’t heard anything about the man’s whereabouts, or whether he will be held accountable for targeting elementary school children, KTVU reported.
Oakland police said they have surveillance footage from the scene, but they are not releasing it.
“An adult man came on campus specifically looking for my child, and he found him in the bathroom, and he assaulted him,” the boy’s mother told the outlet. “I believe he needs to pay for what he did.”
The child’s family believes the man is related to one of their son’s schoolmates, and that he targeted the two students he thought were bullying his niece over snacks, the outlet reported.
The parents told the outlet they’ve complained about security on campus, because “it seems some gates are only locked at certain times.”
The school district said campus gates are locked during school hours, but the man walked onto campus after school.
Oakland police said the investigation is ongoing, and asked anyone with information to contact the Special Victims Unit at 510-238-7910.
