Teen dies after SUV hit her while trick-or-treating with friend, North Carolina cops say
A teenager died after an SUV struck her and another girl while they were trick-or-treating in North Carolina, officials said.
The two 14-year-old friends were walking on a Greensboro-area road when a driver ran into them on Halloween night, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol.
One of the teens was seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital. The girl — who lived in the Durham area — later died from crash-related injuries, state troopers wrote in a news release.
The other girl was evaluated for minor injuries at the scene, officials wrote.
Troopers were called to the crash at about 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. The wreck was reported on Haw River Road in Oak Ridge, a Guilford County town roughly 15 miles northwest of Greensboro.
At the time of the incident, the girls were trick-or-treating and walking toward the northeast, officials said. The SUV reportedly had been going in the same direction before hitting the teens.
Officials said the crash happened “at a time when the sun had already set, and darkness filled the area. The deceased teenager was wearing dark clothing and walking in an area of the road that did not provide ambient lighting.”
N.C. State Highway Patrol said the person behind the wheel of the SUV wasn’t impaired or speeding. The driver isn’t expected to face charges.
The crash closed a section of Haw River Road for about three hours near Apple Grove Road. The scene was about a half-mile from a trunk-or-treat crash that killed an 11-year-old in 2019, McClatchy News reported.
