35-year-old dies after rope from ship hits him on South Carolina river, coroner says
A 35-year-old man died after a rope from a ship hit him on a South Carolina river, officials said.
The man was working with the rope when it reportedly “struck him in the chest.” The impact caused the worker to go into cardiac arrest in the Charleston area, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.
The man was pronounced dead at the North Charleston Terminal, a shipping hub along the East Coast. The man was identified in an Oct. 31 news release as 35-year-old Jayson Nieto of the Philippines.
The coroner’s office was called on Oct. 26 in reference to the incident, which was reported on a ship in the Cooper River.
Berkeley County officials were among several local agencies responding to Nieto’s death. The coroner’s office reported that it had joined the Charleston County Coroner’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard in an ongoing investigation.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration and state OSHA officials didn’t immediately have additional information about the workplace death to share with McClatchy News on Nov. 1.
