A driver died after an axle broke from a truck and hit his car on a South Carolina interstate, officials said.

The tractor-trailer was traveling north on I-85 when it veered off the road and into a concrete wall. The impact caused an axle to come loose before the piece of the truck flew across the median and into southbound traffic on Oct. 26, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.

The axle then hit a Toyota, sending the driver of the car to a Spartanburg-area hospital. The man died a week later on Nov. 3, state troopers said in a news release.

The truck driver wasn’t hurt in the crash, which was reported at about 10:30 a.m. near mile marker 83. The crash happened in the Cowpens area, roughly 40 miles northeast of Greenville.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased driver as 49-year-old Larry L. Thomas II. He’s from Glen Allen, Virginia, north of Richmond.
