A 25-year-old driver was shot to death during a road-rage incident in Georgia, officials said.

A 3-year-old who had been riding in the car was found “with a small cut from flying glass” after the gunfire erupted on Monday, Oct. 31, according to the DeKalb County Police Department.

Now, a man is charged with murder in the case, news outlets reported. Police in a news release didn’t list attorney information for the suspect, who they identified as 59-year-old Eric Simmons.

First responders were called at about 1 p.m. to a parking lot on Gresham Road, near Interstate 20 and less than 10 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta, according to police and WXIA. Officers discovered a man had been shot several times, and he was taken to a hospital.

The man later died. He was identified as 25-year-old Darryl Wiley.

The 3-year-old girl found in the car was evaluated after broken glass left her injured, according to police.

The shooting reportedly stemmed from a road-rage incident on I-20. Police said the suspect followed Wiley before getting out of his car and firing a gun multiple times.

“I heard the gunshots, and I ran to the window to see what happened,” Jigneshkumar Patel, who works in the area, told WSB-TV. “I see the guy was lying on the floor.”

Simmons later was arrested and taken to the DeKalb County Jail. He faced murder and aggravated assault charges, news outlets reported.

Police in their news release didn’t reveal more details about the road-rage incident and didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Nov. 4.
