An Indiana family is mourning another loss after a fatal shooting during a funeral service.

Shannon Turman and her husband, Alan “Jermaine” Turman, were attending her mother’s funeral in Indianapolis on Saturday, Nov. 5, when her ex-husband showed up, Shannon Turman told WTHR.

Her ex-husband, Stefen Lowe, got into a fight with Jermaine Turman in the parking lot of the church, Shannon Turman told the Indy Star. Mourners broke up the fight and Lowe temporarily left the scene.

Lowe returned and shot 42-year-old Jermaine Turman, who died at the scene, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a Nov. 7 news release and the Marion County Coroner’s Office told McClatchy News.

Thirty-five-year-old Lowe was detained and later arrested on a preliminary murder charge, Indianapolis police said. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.

Shannon Turman and Lowe got divorced in February, WTHR reported. She married Jermaine Turman on Aug. 24 and had a protective order against Lowe at the time of the shooting, she told the Indy Star.

The Turmans had a wedding reception celebration planned for mid-November, Shannon Turman told WTHR. Instead, they’re having another funeral.

“(Jermaine Turman) was a wonderful man,” Shannon Turman told the Indy Star. “He was my best friend… He had such dreams and aspirations for his life. All these years we’ve been friends and loved each other, and we finally got the chance to get married and be one. … And it’s ripped from us.”
