Woman’s walk with her dog leads to a huge NC lottery win. ‘I was in tears’

Penny Lamb walks her dog every morning in Greensboro, but this time, something was different. A six-figure payday helped add a spring to her step.

As she was taking her usual stroll, she got an email from the North Carolina Education Lottery, she told officials in a Dec. 30 news release.

“I noticed the email was different,” Lamb said. “It said ‘claim your prize.’ I was so nervous!”

Lamb had won the Cash 5 jackpot of $599,133 after buying six tickets for the Dec. 20 drawing, according to lottery officials. She said she called her boyfriend when she realized the prize.

“I saw how much I won,” Lamb said. “I was in tears.”

Lamb had bought her lucky tickets the morning before while on her usual walk with her dog, Denali, she told lottery officials.

The Greensboro woman took home $425,445 after taxes, according to the release.

Lamb told lottery officials she plans to use the winnings to add to her savings, help friends and family, and donate to animal shelters.

“It took a few days to sink in,” Lamb said. “It’s giving us a head start going into the new year.”

Greensboro is about 80 miles northwest of Raleigh.
