Cynthia Brown lives in a small town in North Carolina where she says word spreads fast.

So, when she won a $100,000 prize in the North Carolina lottery recently, the news got around quickly, she told lottery officials, according to a Jan. 10 news release.

“Trust me the whole town knew by the next morning,” Brown said.

Brown, 61, bought her $25 Extreme Cash scratch-off ticket from Dowdle Mountain Pit Stop in Franklin, where she lives, which is nearly 200 miles west of Charlotte.

When she scratched and saw the number 13, she realized she had won a $100,000 prize, and she started shaking, she told officials.

“I couldn’t even write my name on the ticket I was shaking so much,” Brown said. “I was floored.”

Brown collected her prize on Monday, Jan. 9, and after tax withholdings, she took home $71,257.
