A 6-year-old child is recovering after being run over by a school bus, news outlets reported, citing Georgia deputies.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, as the school bus was dropping off students at Grande Park in River Island, WFXG reported, citing the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the boy was riding a go-kart across the street as his father looked on, according to WRDW.

“For unknown reasons, [the child] reversed the go-kart just as the bus began to pull forward, and drove under the bus, causing the driver’s side rear tire to run over [them],” deputies told The Augusta Chronicle.

Several people, including the child’s father, witnessed the incident and parents of the remaining students on the bus were called to come pick them up, WJBF reported. No one else was hurt.

Investigators determined the school bus driver wasn’t at fault, according to the Columbia County School District.

In a statement, district officials offered their “sincere wishes for a speedy recovery for the young person involved in this unfortunate accident.” Officials said the boy is not a student in the district.

The injured child was in stable condition as of Jan. 11, sheriff’s office Major Steve Morris told McClatchy News. Additional information about the incident wasn’t immediately available.

Columbia County is about 15 miles west of downtown Augusta.
