After Adam Meloche scratched his Michigan lottery ticket, he said he “must have looked it over 100 times.”

It was no small prize — and he just wasn’t sure he could believe his eyes, according to a March 22 news release from the Michigan Lottery.

Needing official verification, Meloche pulled up the lottery app on his phone and scanned his $20 Cashword Times 20 instant game ticket.

“And when it said I had won $1 million, I was shocked,” he told lottery officials.

The first thing he wanted to do was tell loved ones about his big win.

“I called everyone I could think of to share the good news, but no one was answering their phones,” he said in the release. “I was celebrating so loud; I woke my one-year-old daughter up from her nap!”

The 33-year-old dad said he bought his winning lottery ticket while at a Wesco gas station in Spring Lake, about 30 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

“I had been pretty lucky playing Club Keno and when I cashed my ticket, I decided to buy a few Cashwords,” he told lottery officials . “The second one I scratched was the $1 million winner.”

He recently claimed his prize, where he was given two options: 30 annual payments worth the full $1 million, or a one-time payment of about $634,000.

Meloche chose the lump sum payment, according to the release.

He plans to use the money to buy a truck, go golfing and spoil his family, officials said.

“Winning is a huge relief but it gives me a lot to think about in terms of what to do with the money,” he said in the release. “I’m going to be smart with it, but I am also going to splurge a little on my wife and daughter. We’re going to take a trip to Chicago for a shopping spree soon!”

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
