A husband was grocery shopping with his wife when he decided to buy two Michigan lottery tickets.

Once the Holton couple got home, the man scratched the $10 Luxury Cashword tickets and saw that one was a big winner.

“When I saw I’d won $500,000, I didn’t get too excited because I didn’t believe what I was seeing,” the man, who chose to remain anonymous, told lottery officials.

Unsure if he could believe his eyes, the 38-year-old man recruited a few more pairs of eyes, according to a May 4 news release from the Michigan Lottery.

“I had my wife look the ticket over and she confirmed what I was seeing, so we had my mom and one of my friends come over to look at it,” the man said when claiming his prize. “After they looked the ticket over and confirmed the prize, it started sinking in that we had really won.”

He plans to use his prize money for home repairs and investing, according to the release.

“Winning is such a blessing,” the man said.

Holton is about 55 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
