A teen girl drowned as she and her friends waded into the deep end at a Georgia water park, the coroner’s office said.

It happened Sunday, May 7, during a visit to Palm Beach Island in Swainsboro, according to the Emanuel County Coroner’s Office. The human-made beach has a diving board, water slide and other water activities, photos show.

The girl went into the deep end with her friends but couldn’t swim, Deputy Coroner Katie Denison told McClatchy News. Struggling to stay afloat, she latched onto a friend’s back before going under.

The others made it out of the water safely and ran to get help, Denison said.

The teen’s body was found after about 45 minutes, according to the coroner’s office. She was taken to a hospital by ambulance and later died, despite efforts to save her.

Officials haven’t released her name.

Swainsboro is about 175 miles southeast of Atlanta.
