A regular lottery player from Baltimore, Maryland, recently stopped by one of the places he frequents to check his latest batch of tickets.

When he got to Tobacco Outlet, the clerk was celebrating selling a big ticket, the 72-year-old told officials, according to a May 17 Maryland Lottery news release.

“I’m friendly with several of the owners of the places where I buy tickets,” he said. “I joined my friend as he celebrated having sold a big Powerball winner in his store. He was very excited.”

After the celebration, the man finally got around to asking the clerk to check his lottery tickets, including a $20 Powerball ticket, officials said.

“The look on his face told me something big was coming,” he said.

That’s when the pair realized that the big Powerball win they’d been celebrating was in the man’s pocket the whole time, officials said. He had won a $100,000.

“We were all stunned,” he said. “Between me and the owner, it got pretty loud in there, but that was nothing compared to when I got home and told my wife.”

The retired computer specialist said he and his wife had discussed moving into a retirement community. With their big prize, the couple plan to move earlier.
