A woman was rescued after falling into a Colorado river and yelling for help while clinging to a tree, police said.

Bystanders heard the 78-year-old woman’s calls for help coming from the Arkansas River and called 911 shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, the Pueblo Police Department said in a June 19 news release.

Police said several officers “climbed down a steep embankment to hold” the woman while they waited for additional help to arrive.

The Pueblo Fire Department, along with American Medical Response, got the woman to safety, and she was taken to a hospital, according to police.

Pueblo is about 115 miles south of Denver.
