A father was killed when his head hit a bridge during a boating trip with his kids in Georgia, officials said.

The man’s 16-year-old took over the boat, driving it to a dock to get help. First responders performed CPR on the man, but they weren’t able to revive him at the scene, Brian Darby, chief of Liberty County Fire Services, told the Coastal Courier.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said it responded just after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28. The incident was reported along Jones Creek in Liberty County, south of Savannah.

The man was operating the boat while his children — ages 2 and 16 — were on board. While the family was going under a bridge, the father struck his head on the cement structure, the Department of Natural Resources’ Law Enforcement Division said in a news release.

The man was identified as 44-year-old Joshua Weitz Gill of Ludowici, roughly 55 miles southwest of Savannah.

The bridge didn’t sustain structural damage, officials told WJCL.
