A 19-year-old woman was struck by a car and severely injured while trying to save a dog from a highway, New York cops told news outlets.

The woman walked onto State Route 96 in Manchester at about 5 p.m. on July 13, according to WHAM.

She was trying to save a dog that had been hit by another vehicle, according to Fingerlakes1.

The dog died after being struck, Finger Lakes Daily News reported.

The woman was airlifted to a hospital with injuries to her lower body, WHAM reported. The drivers of the vehicles involved remained at the scene, and police did not expect to file charges, according to the outlet.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office said it could not provide information about the incident to McClatchy News.

Manchester is about 90 miles east of Buffalo. State Route 96 runs northwest to southeast across New York on the southeastern side of Rochester.
