The 14-year-old died and the 13-year-old passenger was seriously injured, the sheriff’s office said.

A 14-year-old was killed and two others were injured when the teen lost control on an ATV and crashed, Louisiana deputies said.

The teen boy and a 13-year-old passenger were riding on an ATV in Loranger on July 24 when they lost control of the vehicle, driving off the road, according to a news release from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office on July 25.

The ATV hit a culvert, multiple fence posts and then burst into flames, the sheriff’s office said.

“The mother of the deceased as well as a passerby attempted to save the 14-year-old but were unable due to the extent of the fire,” the sheriff’s office said.

The 14-year-old did not survive the crash.

Deputies said the teen’s mom was severely burned as she tried to save her child. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The 13-year-old passenger also had serious injuries, the sheriff’s office said, and was taken to the hospital and then into surgery.

He stabilized and was taken to a children’s hospital for more treatment, the sheriff’s office said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, but the sheriff’s office said “speed is believed to be a factor.”

Loranger is about 70 miles north of New Orleans.
