As a husband scratched his Missouri lottery ticket, he immediately realized it was a winner.

He just didn’t know how big of a prize he had won, according to an Aug. 16 news release from the Missouri Lottery.

“The first spot was $5,000, and I still had a lot of spots to scratch!” he said.

The Harrison County man would soon learn he had won the “In the Green” top prize of $100,000.

But even after getting home, he didn’t tell his wife the exciting news right away, according to the release. Instead, he let her finish the TV show she was watching.

Once the show was over, he was ready to break the news.

“I told her, ‘Come here and sit down. I’ve got something to tell you,” the man recalled to lottery officials. “And she goes, ‘Is it bad or good?’”

The news was good — but she couldn’t believe it, according to the release. So, the wife got out a piece of paper and began calculating the prize amount.

“We were kind of in shock for a few days,” the wife told lottery officials.

The man bought his winning $5 ticket at a Kum & Go convenience store in Bethany, about 90 miles northeast of Kansas City.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
