A North Carolina man stopped making breakfast to check his lottery numbers — and the prize left him “shocked.”

Kendrick Woods, who long believed he would win the lottery, finally did after he bought tickets for the Cash 5 jackpot game. One morning, he got the urge to see how the tickets fared.

“Something just came into my mind saying, ‘Check your Cash 5,’” Woods told the N.C. Education Lottery in a Sept. 12 news release. “I was in the middle of cooking some sausages.”

It turns out, one of Woods’ tickets matched all the numbers picked in the Sept. 8 drawing, scoring him a $100,000 prize. He said he couldn’t believe his luck.

“It shocked me so bad,” Woods told lottery officials. “I ran upstairs and woke my wife up to tell her.”

Woods hit the jackpot after he spent $1 on his lucky ticket at a BP gas station on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh. He chose the Quick Pick option, meaning the lottery randomly selected the numbers for him, officials said.

“Just was in the right place at the right time,” Woods told the N.C. Education Lottery. “It is truly a blessing.”

Woods — who kept $71,250 after taxes — said he wants to buy a house after his big win. He is from Creedmoor, a Granville County town roughly 25 miles north of downtown Raleigh.

It’s not the first time a huge windfall added a twist to someone’s morning meal. Last year, North Carolina officials said a woman started screaming when she learned of her husband’s lottery win over breakfast, McClatchy News reported.
